Legendary comedian Joan Rivers and civil rights attorney Gloria Allred both officiated same-sex weddings last weekend, in New York City and West Hollywood, respectively.

Last weekend was particularly gay -- and married -- as a pair of longtime LGBT allies officiated at separate weddings of gay couples, one on each coast of the U.S.

Civil rights attorney Gloria Allred performed a marriage between J. Charles McFadden and Daniel McFadden on the West Coast, while Joan Rivers served as the officiant marrying William "Jed" Ryan and Joseph Aiello in New York City.

Allred, who represented couples in the suit that initially won marriage equality in California (before it was temporarily revoked by Proposition 8), officiated her first same-sex wedding Sunday -- fittingly in the LGBT enclave of West Hollywood. Allred pronounced the McFaddens legally married in an intimate ceremony at the couple's West Hollywood home.

Meanwhile, in New York City, famed comedian and fashionista Joan Rivers officiated as Manhattan couple Ryan and Aiello exchanged wedding vows at the Plaza Athenee.

As these two-of-a-kind wedding photos illustrate, summer 2014 may well go down in history as this millennium's summer of love, with fast-spreading marriage equality putting the issue front and center for same-sex couples and LGBT allies alike.
